Questions about glucosamine supplement for dog?

can anybody confirm giving the dog glucosamine supplement can actually help dog’s joints and improve movement? or it is just pretty much a hype? if it does work, what is the age a dog should start taking the supplement? what is the good brand/product to look for?

I’ve been using it for years on my dogs with great results. Was even recommended by our orthopedic vet. I use the Kirkland brand, from Costco, for people, exact same ingredients as vet prescribed and MUCH CHEAPER.

The job of cartilage in bones is to aid lubrication within the joint and also protect the delicate ends of the bones. The breakdown of cartilage in bones is the major cause of arthritis in joints. When the cartilage on the ends of the bones break down this can often lead to the ends of the bones becoming exposed, which can lead to bone rubbing against bone in a joint.

This is most cases will lead to intense pain and inflammation which are the major symptoms of arthritis.

So can you give your dog glucosamine, in short yes you can. This is, because it is a naturally occurring substance, it is already present in dogs bodies, it just has to be given to them in the right dose. The required dose will vary dependent upon the size of your dog, but is roughly between 500-2000 mg’s a day, but rest assured that any good supplement that you buy will come with instructions and dosage guidelines for your dog.

Another substance is Cetyl Myristoleate which was discovered in the National Institute of Health in the 1960’s, it regulates the immune system, controls inflammation and is a natural pain reliever.

Now it has been clinically proven that any supplement you give to your dog will have a more positive effect if you use a dog joint supplement that has a combination of these substances as a pose to just one, and it makes sense as they all have their own individual functions for promoting healthy cartilage and healthy joint function.

Glucosamine Sulfate supplement for dogs/arthritis relief?

Ok, so my family dog is around 8 or 9 years old, weighs 75lbs. His arthritis is getting bad and he sometimes limps. I have bought 500mg glucosamine tablets from my local drug store, does anyone know what the dosage would be for my dog, if these human supplements are okay for him to take. My vet is offering no help as she has him on long term steriods, which we stopped giving to him cuz I know they are going to kill him eventually :[

Something that might help is Vitamin E oil mixed into his food. I just buy the 400 IU capsules and give one a day by squeezing the oil out of the capsule and into the food. I never thought of the glucosamine for a dog, but I think I would research before giving it to my dog to make sure it is safe and what the possible side effects (if any) might be.

I am a 46 year old female that is over weight and can’t lose any of it.?

Here it is. I had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago and was on Premarin. I had been a smoker for 30 years. I no longer take hormones, I quit smoking in December of 2006. I have gained about 50 lbs. I have for about 2 months changed my diet, I eat 5 small meals of between 250 and 300 calories, low carbs, high protien. I do not drink soda, just water and fat free milk. I have been walking about 3 miles 3x a week and walk about a mile the other days with my dogs. I try to do more exercising but after I walk, my ankles hurt so bad that I can barely walk after a rest. I have changed shoes also to see if that helps. What am I doing wrong so that I can lose the weight? I know less weight would help my ankles. I take a good multi vitamin, Chromium Picolinate and glucosamine chondroitin MSM. Can anyone give me some advice??

First, for me 1200 calories a day did the trick. Second, I bought a bike. The walking can be less aerobic than biking, and you use more muscles biking. Next, for me I changed food by eating mainly veggies…a few fruits and less protein. I have lost 15 pounds in the last 4 months…not great but it is slowly getting better. Glucosamine supplements for dogs…are mine ok?

I know nothing really about glucosamine supplements but I have a 2 year old mutt and her hips click when she sits and I have noticed she hesitates on the stairs. I spoke to the vet and he told me I can try glucosamine supplements.
