Just wondering if anyone in the group who has a dog with cancer, has used the Cartrophin Vet Injections.?

My dog Cagney has systemic mast cell cancer which seems to be somewhat “under control”. Right now her mobility is becoming the biggest problem. I am very hesitant to try them because in my research although there seems to be very few side effects, one of the side effects have been- they have caused the odd dog with cancer to collapse collapse. We are going to have to do something soon or she is going to become totally imobile. She is already on glucosamine,Shark cartilage and recieving accupuncture.

Ive had to let 2 of my pets go because of cancer. My oldest dog lived longer because of the injections, but the quality of life is not the same. Its very hard to let one of them go, but in all reality we don’t know how much they may be suffering. I just wish it was this easy when it comes to people. My last dog was a female and only 5 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer 1 month after I found out that I had cancer. It hurt so much to say good bye but I know that she didn’t suffer too long. You will know when the time comes to let go. I am so sorry for you.

Does anyone know how much glucosamine/chondroitin I should give my dog to help heal a torn ligament?

My terrier (18lbs) has torn her acl ligament. I’ve found on the web that glucosamine/chondroitin helps to heal this problem, but I can’t find any information about how much to give her. My vet doesn’t know (I’m from a small town and the local vet tends to prescribe pain medicine rather than vitamins). Does anyone know where I can find this out?

I work for a large Veterinary Hospital that has two specialists that are performing ACL surgeries daily. The only sure fix for a torn
ACL is surgery. Glucosamine will help build up the bones to make them strong, but will not help the torn acl. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as Rimadyl or Deramaxx may be prescribed by the Vet, to help with pain, but it is still not a fix. It’s like you or I taking ibuprofen. The surgery is costly when done by a board certified surgeon. Around 1800 - 2000 dollars.

Please suggest a good over the counter or prescription dog food for joint problems?

My dog is a 6 year old, 75 pound mutt. 1/4 beagle, 1/4 bassett hound and 1/2 unknown (thought to be german shepard, lab, bloodhound or something large). Just recently, he’s been diagnosed with arthritis in his back and has some minor bulging discs. These have improved with treatment and bed rest but now he’s on prescription IAMS joint food and Synovi G chews both with high Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate. I’ve noticed a major improvement however the cost of IAMS prescription food has increased dramatically…from $50 for a 30lb bag to $70!!!!! I go through one bag a month so this is getting expensive. I’m calling around to get other prices however I’d also like to know if there’s other dry food options.

To be quite honest the foods that are specially formulated for joint issues have such minute amounts of Glucosamine in the food. They put just enough to be able to label their food as having Glucosamine in the formula.
