My dog was recently neutered and now he has a fever?

Hi, I had my dog neutered about 4 days ago. They gave me the pain medication Metacam for three days after surgery. He was doing just fine and right back to normal the next day. Then I noticed when the medicine finished, he had a bad fever, he was shaking as if he was in pain, and now he has mucus discharge coming out of his eyes. I went to the doctor and requested more pain meds, but he still has a fever and still shaking. What is going on with my pup? Is he still in pain because of the neutering? Im starting to freak out because Im not getting straight answers from the vet. I was told the pain of neutering for dogs usually lasts only 3-4 days. Is this true? Please, I would be so grateful for any help. Thank you.

Typically pain does last 3 to 4 days with some going less time than that and others going longer than that. It is hard to notice pain in some individual animals just because they do not show it in clinical ways.

As far as pain medications, I have never used it on my dogs after a neuter. I use hydrotherapy, antibiotics, cold laser therapy, and the combination of other natural and traditional medicine/therapies when needed. Not all dogs need all of this, some need none of it. Generally speaking, a younger puppy is going to feel less pain than a 10 year old dog. Same goes for people when we have surgeries done. A younger person recuperates typically faster than an older person.

My vet sends every dog home with antibiotics with a spay or neuter and that is what is taught to us. Meloxicam (Melacam) is an anti-inflammatory with pain relieving effects. It is a NSAID, and does reduce fever. Thus, if your dog has been on it, it is very possible that he has been kept from exhibiting clinical signs of that fever while on the drug.

If your vet did give you more of Metacam, then you should have his fever down. What level of fever are we talking about? Just barely over normal, over 103, higher?? That makes a world of difference.

The fever will not be from pain typically. However, there are some dogs who will develop a fever from stress and/or pain such as in a severe flea infestation (this happened to one of my personal dogs which two vet schools could find nothing wrong with it was only from the stress of getting 100 fleas on him in the period of an evening while at a dog event).

The fever, however, can also be from infection, such as a localized or staff infection. Think of a person at a hospital having a surgery and how many infections completely unrelated to the initial condition can just be picked up.

Your dog needs to go to the vet immediately in the morning if he still has a high fever or exhibiting any of these other abnormal symptoms. If his temperature is just a little over normal (talking 1/10s of degrees not a full degree or more higher), then he is just running high or that might be his normal temperature. Dogs, just like horses, show different temperatures between individual animals with females typically medium on the scale, intact males higher on the scale, and neutered males and spayed females on the lower side of the scale, BUT this is not always the case.

Other things to look for on your dog are his gums. His gums should be light pink. Not white and definitely not red. White gums show infection/disease/stress/anemic/generally not doing well. Red gums on the other hand and I mean really dark pink to actually being red show high fevers and more than anything else dehydration. If you notice that your pup’s skin is looser than normal, you are probably dealing with dehydration on top of everything else which can happen even if he is drinking water. He might just not be getting enough of it.

If he happens to be dehydrated, you can try to do something at home for him. Get some Pedialyte which is loaded with electrolytes and give him 1 oz at a time. If he will not drink it, try using an oral syringe or kiddie liquid medicine type dispenser to get it into him. However, if he is dehydrated and you are not able to get this into him in the next hour or two, he needs to go to the emergency vet to get fluids before he becomes too dehydrated. If he has an infection coupled with the dehydration then you must act fast and not just wait around.

To help with the fever, you can use ice packs around his body. Place a light towel between him and the pack to help keep it from being too cold next to his body. You can also place him in your kitchen sink and spray his artery areas and body with the sprayer. If you do not have a sprayer either use the sink or the bathtub and pour cold water over him still trying to get around his arteries (especially around his head and neck). Try to avoid where the incision is at.

You can also take towels and soak them in cold water. Wring them out and then wrap them around him. The idea is that the coldness will help bring his fever down.

A rule of thumb about fevers. Their temperature goes up and down naturally throughout the day. The more that you take their temperature (boy dogs here) the more that you can cause a secondary issue with their prostrate and anal tract. This can lead to a higher fever just from sheer aggravation. Seen this one on my own dogs too. If you must check it, try to only check it once per hour or two. Not multiple times an hour as this might cause this additional/higher fever.

If he is swelling in his sheath and/or shaft area, then you can use the ice packs in those areas (again with the towel maybe a medium weight one for this). This will help with the inflammation.

If you do not have an emergency clinic, and you are not able to get your normal vet or another vet in town right now, you can also give children’s chewable aspirin. The dosage is 1 BABY tablet per 16 pounds or 1 adult aspirin per 32 pounds. (This is about 5 mg per pound of weight). There are potential side effects just like with any medicine. You do not want to give aspirin to puppies as they do not have the enzymes needed to digest and break it down properly.

If you are concerned about your vet not being straight forward with you and not being as concerned about your dog as you are, you are the owner of the dog. Take your dog to another vet in the morning and get a second opinion. They will be more than happy to see your dog and to assist in any way that they can. Just do not bad mouth your vet. Most vets in an area are friends or know one another, so you do not want to run your mouth with your opinion of the vet. Only state what the vet has and has not done. That way nothing could (if it would ever have) get back to your vet other than you were concerned about your dog.

If I were in your shoes, I would have the dog at the emergency vet now or if I thought that his condition was stable without getting worse every few hours, then I would wait until the first thing in the morning and be the very first person at the door when the vet got there.

Review of Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne: The Program that Promises Maximum Fat Loss in Minimum Workout Time

Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne promises fast fat loss results for men and women who don’t have a lot of time for exercise. This is a bold promise, and the workouts promise maximum results in only three workouts per week.

Let’s take a look at this claim, and see if it really measures up!

Before we get to the program, let’s take a look at the expert behind the workouts. I’ve come across Craig Ballantyne’s name many times in popular fitness magazines such as Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness, and even in Oxygen and Shape magazines. So the program is clearly put together by a trusted fitness expert. (Craig Ballantyne is Men’s Health Magazine Expert, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist)

I’ve also talked to Craig about his training and education background, and I’ll be honest, it was impressive, unlike the trainers with weekend certifications that pop up at large commercial gyms. Craig’s experience goes back to the mid-nineties, in both the gym and in the research lab. He’s actually led research trials on sport supplements, strength training, and cardiovascular training.

Plus, Craig has been a strength coach and has worked with hundreds of clients in thousands of training sessions. This is a unique, and thorough background, so its not surprising he’s come up with a new training system for fat loss.

In fact, Craig’s articles are always pretty hard on traditional aerobic cardio workouts. So if you’re looking for new ways to spend 30 or 60-minutes doing cardio, then this program is not for you. But if you only have 45 minutes to workout, a couple of times per week, and you have access to only a bench, dumbells, and an exercise ball, then you’ll like what Craig has for you here.

Now one of the biggest questions about the program is simply, “What is Turbulence Training?” Well according to Craig, its the combination of resistance training and interval training used to boost your metabolism so that your body burns calories and fat between workouts. He says, “Cardio doesn’t boost your metabolism after exercise. Only strength training and interval training do that - while you work, sleep, and eat - your body will be shedding fat.”

So again, if you are one of those people who loves machines, or cardio equipment, or marathon workouts, then this program is not for you.

Frankly, I’ve used the program myself and recommended to many others. Why? Because no one has time for long workouts! That’s why. After an eight or ten hour workday, a round-trip commute of 90 minutes, and spending time with my family, I just don’t have time to do another 90 minute workout every day of the week.

In fact, I either get up early and do the workout before work, or I do it just before bed. This workout is perfect for busy men and women. But its not the type of routine that is going to turn anyone into a pro bodybuilder. If you want maximum muscle and want to bulk up, try another one of Craig’s programs. Sure, you can get other programs that leave you smashed and puking after the first workout, but Turbulence Training is not like that. Soreness doesn’t matter, only results matter! The History of Hunting Involves Sight and Smell

No history of hunting is complete without mentioning the animals that helped humans survive and still are used for hunting. Today it is more for sport than survival, but for many it still provides food for the table.

In prehistoric times people hunted for food as well as fur and leather for clothing and hides used for shelter. As society became less nomadic, more agricultural it allowed for raising food in one place, but hunting didn’t go away.

Even in the 13th century there were laws forbidding hunting during breeding seasons to insure the conservation of game animals.

History of hunting while gunpowder and firearms are relatively recent, bow and arrows, snares and traps have all been used to animals. Hunting dogs were developed to point and “set” game birds, allowing the handlers to toss a net over birds. Faster dogs were used to chase down game.

Falcons and even eagles have been used in the capacity of hunters. With the domestication of the horse, human had a means of speed to get alongside big game such as the bison in North America.

Early hunters also used methods of digging pits as a trap and running larger game off cliffs as a means of survival.

Today still hunting, stand hunting, stalking and driving are most common.

Still hunting is tracking animals when it’s known they’re in the area but not sighted.

Stand hunting is taking a position and waiting for the game to go by - often evidenced as deer stands and placed on pathways or near feeding areas.

Stalking is when the animal is spotted but out of range and the hunter moves within range while staying out of sight.

Driving is when one group of people deliberately makes noise which drives the animals in range or past armed hunters.

Dogs have long played an important part in finding or game.

The scent receptors of a hunting dog’s nose are much higher than our own plus they LOVE to hunt and want to please.

Today, as in years past, methods vary, but the history of hunting hasn’t changed getting the game for food.

Question on Fleas and Ticks?

What are best products to use to prevent Fleas and Ticks? My dog is Chihuahua is gonna be indoors alot but people say they still need protection? is that true if its indoor dog? [ im gonna be a new dog owner that is why im asking :)]

Stay away from the crap that you can buy for cheap in the grocery stores (Hartz, etc.) - they can be dangerous for your pet, especially since your pet is small! Your best bet is to go with one of the good quality brands, such as those you would find at the vet’s - Frontline, Advantage, Revolution (which also covers heartworm prevention). I would call your vet and see what product they recommend for you little dog. You might want to go with Revolution or a similar product so that you can cover heartworm as well as fleas and ticks - heartworm is a very serious disease that dogs and cats can get via mosquitos and your pet needs to be on preventative throughout his/her life! Revolution requires a prescription and a yearly heartworm test (usually offered at your pet’s yearly checkup), but it is a great all-in-one product!

Dog Foods Cause You To Order Pet Medications

This can actually save me money too! The best pets rx is prevention. I will order pet meds when necessary, but I prefer to just keep her healthy in the first place.

Most commercial pet foods are garbage. Most, not all, be sure to read the label. One of the things lots of companies do is add ethoxyquin as a preservative to dry foods. That’s not a good thing at all for her and it’s illegal for my food so it makes sense not to give it to her either, right? Think of this the next time you order pet medications for your sickly pet. Ethozyquin causes all sorts of health problems and they know this, and yet put it in their foods and tell you to feed your dog their product.

They can also add euthanized cats and dogs and zoo animals and road kill, grind it all up and call it ‘meat meal’. Yes, most dog food companies put this into your beloved pet’s food. This also includes the dog tags, flea collars, the bags they put the dead animals in and the poop inside them! One study found upto 25% fecal material in the ‘meat meal’. Do you want to pay for that? More importantly, do you want to feed that to your pet? I know I don’t. I love my dog.

Another really bad ingredient that gets into commercial food is the sodium pentobarbital they use to put suffering animals down. That stays in the body of the poor deceased animals that get ground up into the ‘meat meal’ So, when your pooch eats her food she’s actually behaving like a cannibal and eating chemicals that cause all sorts of health issues. There is a better way.

Your dog has many generations behind him/her that were fed on the same stuff we eat everyday. Store bought dog food is not now and has never been necessary to your pets survival. Now science has guidelines for the best nutrition of your pet, broken down to certain breeds as well. You can select a quality brand of commercial food that truly is looking out for her nurtition or make good stuff yourself at home. I do both.

Here’s some of the receipes my little girl loves. You can add more protein (meat), or fiber(veggies), depending on your particular pet’s need. These are foods that I can eat so I know they will be good for her too, although not all people food is good for our pets.

This first receipe I call her rice dish. She eats about 1/3 of it each meal so it goes pretty quickly. Occasionaly I get to freeze a portion or two and that makes it easy to just grab, microwave to thaw, and heat a little before serving. You may also double the receipe to make things easier on you, the cook.

Start with a medium sized pot. Brown 1/2 pound of lean beef or chicken. Then add 1 1/2 Cups of water and 1 Cup of uncooked rice (brown rice is best but white will also work). Boil together until rice is tender, it should be slightly watery at this point. Add 1/2 Cup grated carrots, 1 small can of peas, and any scraps of vegtables you may have leftover (if your dog likes them). I also add a dash of garlic because she likes it and it smells good in my kitchen. Simple and yummy.

This next receipe is called her macaroni dish. This is a little large and lasts about twice as long. Oftentimes I alternate these dishes to give her variety.

Start with a large pot and a splash of oil. Add 2 Cups of lean meat… beef or chicken or lamb, brown. Yes, you can keep any pan drippings in there and she just loves that. Add 2 or 3 choppped carrots, a zuchini chopped, 1 stalk celery chopped, and a can of peas. You can also add the scraps of broccoli or the potato scrappings from last night or any leftover veggies you may have. Cover with water and simmer till veggies are starting to get soft. Add 1/2 pound macaroni and continue to cook uncovered until pasta is soft. Serve her one big scoop and freeze the rest in
baggies. Take out one baggie per meal so proportion them accordingly.

As I said earlier, most commercial pet foods are garbage but you can find some that really care about your pet. If you find cooking for your pet to be too bothersome try looking for a quality brand and read the label carefully. I do give my girl dry food 2 to 3 times per week, sometimes with a little ‘people’ food on top. I use the best quality food I can find for her because I love her.

We get very attached to our pets, they become members of the family. From time to time they do need us to order pet meds on their behalf, but if we care for them
properly they can live long happy and healthy lives.
